Making Our Plastic Waste Edible

Image
Plastic is one of the most useful materials as it is super cheap and easy to produce. Plastic utensils allow us to enjoy a meal without the cleanup. Plastic packaging makes us carry stuff with ease and safety. Our momentary convenience is often devastating for marine animals. Marine animals get entangled in this plastic waste and sadly die due to the complications incurred. It is estimated that 100 million marine mammals are killed due to plastic pollution every year.  There is a solution to this problem, and that is using packaging and cutlery substitutes that are biodegradable. Biodegradable means that the product is capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms. To take a further step forward here's to products that are both biodegradable and edible.
Let us start with the one you are probably thinking of, edible spoons! These spoons are made of wheat, rice, or millet flours and were first introduced in 2010. Edible spoons are meant to be used in place of pla…

Drop Tree Bombs To Save The Planet

Image
So this idea is what it sounds like. I've talked about climate change in my blogs. Mainly because it's something that I’m passionate about. I truly feel like the solutions are out there and we just need to make them happen. One such project is using aerial reforestation to restore forests.
Trees are a lifeline of this planet, in the age of climate change. We can only plant so many trees by hand and it is not a cost-effective method for regrowing forests. Trees act like carbon sinks taking the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce oxygen for us. What is great is that the carbon produced is ideally returned to the ground. This allows these plants to aid in reversing and mitigating the devastating effect humans have on the environment. Also, trees help maintain water levels in the ground as well as prevent erosion. Don’t forget how amazing they can be as a habitat for creatures of all kinds.
Aerial reforestation is exactly what it sounds like, reforesting the earth by dr…

Melting Ice Solution: Wrap Greenland in a Blanket

Image
Climate change has affected us all in some way or another. As time progresses we continue to learn the tough lesson that we only have one planet and that we need to take care of it. However, there is hope, because innovation and a global effort can save us. One such Idea is to wrap Greenland in a Blanket.
Greenland is made up of 80% Ice. Ice has a unique property here on earth as it acts as a mirror reflecting the sun's rays into the atmosphere. This is also known as the Albedo effect: To put it simply it is an object's ability to reflect light. By reflecting light into the atmosphere, instead of absorbing it, the arctic can stay cold all year round. Now the carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere act like a reflected ray catcher and send the reflected rays back to earth. Making the planet warmer, thus melting the ice sheets. The more ice sheets melt, a lesser amount the sun's rays are reflected into the atmosphere the next time around.
Why Greenland? It is becaus…

Azolla Event and Climate Change

Image
So this is going to be more of an advocacy post for climate change. Let me start by saying that the earth existed before us and it will continue to exist long after us. Human activities create the climate change that we experience now. While some people still deny this statement, every science educated individual knows this to be a fact. This post will talk about the Azolla event 49 million years ago and as gives us insight into our current global situation.
The Azolla event is an event that occurred 49 million years ago in the middle Eocene epoch. Before this event, the world was so hot that there could be palm trees and alligators on the north pole. Now the earth was hot, mainly because of the carbon dioxide produced from volcanic activity. It was so much CO2 that it made the earth a sauna. Now the reality is humans can’t live in these conditions, but reptiles can, and in fact, they were quite prevalent during this time.
Well, what does this mean? It means that the earth has experie…

5 Simple Ideas To Help Save Bees

Image
Save the bees was a huge movement both last year and a couple of years ago. Where has all the energy gone? Bees still need our help. So here are 5 things you can do to save bees.
Plant organic bee-friendly plants and flowers: GMOs plants are unpredictable; you never know if the side effect of genetic modification can cause harm to bees. Also, you don’t want to make a bee’s job harder for them by planting plants that are a natural deterrent to bees. For example wormwood, mint, and cucumber. So support your local bees by planting appropriately. (Here's a list of bee-friendly plants)
Don’t use toxic persistent chemicals in your home and gardens: If they are bad for bees they're probably bad for you as well. There are better alternatives when choosing to use toxic chemicals. Some plants do it naturally, and I'm pretty sure you can get non-chemical solutions to whatever you're facing.
Support local sustainable agriculture: Local sustainable agriculture can house up to 50% mo…

10 Ideas To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Image
We are all guilty of not doing our part in the fight against climate change. It is funny how the pandemic is giving us the ability to walk back a very small amount of harm we caused the environment. The air is getting cleaner in some places and wildlife are inhabiting parts of the world that they once stood clear of. I think this is a chance for us to reflect on the impact that we humans have on the environment. So let's take this one step further here are 10 ideas to help you save the earth!
Use Fluorescent Bulbs: Fluorescent bulbs have been around for a while yet whenever I walk around I always see Incandescent ones. Fluorescents not only take a fraction of the energy that incandescent bulbs do but they last longer. They are also brighter by comparison. I do go to admit I have an incandescent light bulb in my room but I’ll change mine if you pledge to find the ones in your home and change them as well. By doing so not only will you reduce your energy bill but also your carbon foo…

The Untold Power of Plants

Image
Plants, they’re all around us, yet many of us walk by them every day without a care in the world. We label them according to appearance and usefulness, but they have so much more to give us humans. Such labels include weeds, perennials, ferns, and vegetable plants. We take the variety and quantity of them for granted but fail to learn about them. Plants do so much more for humans than we care to admit. Some uses include materials for our clothes, our medicine, and our nutrition.
With there being so many plants out there, it's hard to tell certain types from others and their names are so hard to remember. The idea is to create an app that contains all the plants that exist and their uses, facts, real-time native location, season, and important information like if the plant is medicinal or poisonous. This app will also have image recognition to help you identify plants in the field. Someone once said if we knew the ability of every plant and plant component (roots, leaves, flowers) o…

Rollable Solar Panels

Image
Rollable solar panels are the future. Why? This is because they’re cheap and easy to make. Normal solar panels take much longer because of the structure and its materials. Conventional panels take a lot more metal and require more manual labor to be put into when making them. Rollable solar panels are kind of like making paper. I say this because it's all about putting a few layers together and smashing them good with each other. This technology is about as simple as a silicon layer and a few other metal layers in between two bendable sheets of plastic or glass. The impressive thing with this is that you can ideally make it as long as you want and as wide as you want.
This type of solar panel is great for several reasons, but the most prominent is the fact that the panel is rollable. This means that you can install and uninstall this device with no hassle; it’s as simple as rolling it up. Can you think of anything that can do the same? You guessed it from projection screens. Imagin…

Ugh.... Why are you wasting food

Image
Food waste is a major problem in our society. Before we start, take a moment to think of all the times you threw something in the garbage just because you were full or didn’t like it. I know I’m guilty of it. The average human wastes a lot of food. Whatever the reason maybe it’s time to change for the better. For some reason, I feel like we can feed everyone in the world just with the food we’ve all wasted. But it’s not just us, major corporations and businesses waste way more food than the average human. What do you think happens to the food that doesn't get ordered at a restaurant? You may think it gets reused but In reality, it doesn’t and ends up in the garbage. Also the scraps from meal preparation are also an issue.
What’s the solution, composting! Composting is a basic gardening technique where food scraps are added to soil with plenty of worms. The worms digest these scraps and give us nutrients rich soil that can be used for farming and gardening. This stuff is way better…

Farm up?

Image
Agriculture is a staple for every nation In the world. The increase of conventional agriculture has caused forests and ecosystems to pay the price. To make way for these farms, corporations set fire to forests causing irreparable damage, and this is deeply saddening. Vertical farming is an idea that has been around for a while but has been kept hidden for most of its existence. Vertical farming is just what it sounds like. Farming with height instead of with a surface area like conventional farms.
Many designs of this type of farm have been presented over the years but some also come with their unique challenges(link to a few of them here). Some of these designs are so advanced that they contain automated water distribution controls, led lights in certain EMR frequencies, and internal climate control systems. Sounds like something out of a science fiction movie right?
The cool thing is these systems can provide any product and any time in the year. What’s cool is certain Michelin starr…
